Our Future Programmes

Midori Foundation has planned several environment protection programmes for implementation in the near future.  All these programmes are based on promoting our concept – “Human Environmental Perfection”.  In order to enhance the socio-economic and cultural status of the rural population, We have formulated the following initiatives:

Workshops at School Farms

Almost all developing countries have faced problems in using the traditional methods of farming.  On one hand it is more productive and environmental friendly if traditional methods are used rather than utilizing technologically advanced modern systems.  On the other hand use of traditional methods has its own limitations and disadvantages:  such as low harvests, low income and excessive labour input etc.  Hence, it will be advantageous to deploy modern agricultural techniques.

In this background it has become necessary to promote environment friendly high productive traditional methods combined with modern technology for agriculture in rural Sri Lanka.

Towards realizing this objective, we have developed a project to conduct workshops in School farms in order to explain the theoretical aspects of farming and also the practical aspects related thereto.

In our close association with traditional farmers over a long period of time, we have observed the difficulty in convincing them to follow modern technological methods properly adapted to suit the environment.  However, we have found that it is possible to bring about a suitable change by educating their children in the school environment itself.

Thus, environment friendly Midori workshops will be conducted in several selected schools in Batapola, Baddegama, Elpitiya and Ambalangoda.

Hog Deer

Hog Deer is an indigenous species of deer whose name was classified in the Red Book in 1930 as an animal facing extinction.  And later this particular species was believed to have gone into extinction.  However, in mid 1980s this animal surfaced once again in and around Elpitiya, but their numbers are said to be very low.  This deer, small in size has a smooth thick hide Brown & Gray in colour.

A local Organisation headed by Ajith and Manohara has volunteered to look after this rare species with whatever assistance they could solicit from the Department of Wildlife Conservation.

A Computer Lab

The University of Kelaniya is the only University in Sri Lanka that offers a BA (special) Degree in Mass Communication.  At present there are around 75 Under-Graduates reading for the degree at this University.  Besides, there are over 1500 Under Graduates that read this subject for General Degrees.

Recently, the Midori Foundation made a donation of 10 Computer Units to the Department of Mass Communication of this University which fulfilled a long felt need of the students and the staff.

The first 3 winners were given SLRs.5,000/= , 3,000/= , and 2,000/= respective and there were also seven other consolation prizes of Rs.500/= each awarded by the Midori Foundation.

Rural Sports Development Project

In recent years,  Sri  Lankan sportsmen and women have shown exceptional talents in the international sports arena and surprisingly many of them who contributed their share to uplift the image of our country were from the rural sector.

Hence, it is our endeavour to help more and more rural youth to develop their talents to national and international levels and bring much more credit to our country.  We believe that sports help to build cultured men and women with great stamina, perfect endurance and quality leadership.

To realize this cherished dream, we propose to establish sports societies in Rural areas with the following objectives:

  1. To enhance the ‘Sports Mentality’ of the younger generation.

  2. To identify talented youth and facilitate proper training under experienced trainers.

  3. To launch  Sports Development Workshops.

  4. To organise inter-village sports festivals.

  5. To sponsor and coordinate sports activities at district and village level.

  6. To provide sports wear and equipment to clubs and sports bodies in the area.

Midori Circle

G/ Batapola Maha Vidyalaya

A Midori Circle was formed on 25th. Sept. 2001 by the students of G/ Batapola Maha Vidyalaya to engage in environmental promotion and protection and ecological studies in the area with the participation and involvement of the people.

Scholarship provided to Orphans

A monthly grant of Rs.750/= each was provided to 4 orphans (Girls without parents) attached to Good Shepphard Convent, Kotahena to pursue higher studies.  This grant was made possible by the generosity of Mrs. Akiko Kagiwada of Japan who responded to an appeal made by the Midori Foundation to establish a Scholarship Fund for the poor and deserving children.

A survey conducted by the Midori Foundation on the social standard of the people of  Kobeithuduwa  revealed that 80% of them do not have any fixed income and 40% of children tend to cease school education within the first 5 years.  The main reason for this pathetic situation is the poor economic status of parents.

Child abuse is also noticed in large numbers.  Parents are forced to compel their children to give up  school education and engage in various other pursuits including child prostitution to feed their families.

Midori Foundation, having considered these aspects has launched an island-wide Scholarship Programme for under-privileged children. For commencement of this programme, schools from  the area were selected and Mr. Koga Michio – General Manager of Meta-Techno Japan made the inaugural presentation of the scholarships.

Introducing a nature friendly, chemical free, highly productive methods for paddy cultivation, we have now initiated a novel system to conserve the environment and educate farmers on the use of bio-fertilizer.  A model paddy field has been already arranged and have proved to the farmers that the same yield or harvest could be obtained by the use of bio-fertilizer and environment friendly pest and weed control methods instead of the highly toxic chemical fertilizer and pest / weed control techniques.

Located in Batapola, Ambalangoda a village in southern Sri Lanka this model paddy field serves as an eye opener for the farmers in this locality as it is acclaimed as the most productive paddy field in the area.

Many farmers from other locations too visit this Model Plot for observation and obtain first-hand information.  In addition, the Midori Foundation has initiated another experimental cultivation of non-indigenous up-country vegetables in the same village.  The vegetables cultivated are Radish, Cabbage and Beetroot, which are normally

cultivated in the highlands of Sri Lanka.  The success of this experiment will help to bolster the income of traditional farmers in the area.

Horticulture has also been introduced to this village for the benefit of unemployed youth of the area.  Also a scheme has been developed to provide basic ingredients required for the cultivation and the cut flowers are purchased from the growers at a reasonable price.  This scheme is considered as an incentive for the young unemployed youth to engage themselves in productive economic activity in harmony with the nature and in their own surroundings.

Meanwhile, a Poster Competition has been organized with the theme “Protecting the Nature”  and the project to save the Hog Deer (“Wilmuwa”) is placed high in the Agenda of our Programme, for protection of the environment.  These together with the socio-environmental awareness programmes conducted by our organisation have combined firmly to establish our motto: “Humanitarian Meditation upon Nature”.
